Some might say that Carroll County is the heart of Maryland. It's a place where people still have picnics on days other than the Fourth of July. These folks love their farms but aren't afraid to explore the development of technology to build a better future. Yes, you may marvel at these town's main streets and their historic architecture, but it is the people that go the extra mile as they welcome you as a neighbor.

Named after one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll, the county is abundant with historical significance. Cultural centers and historical attractions are numerous, due to the region's longstanding agricultural history and its Civil War sites.

The cultural history here provides a unique character that draws people to cities like Westminster, the county seat and home to the Carroll Arts Center; Sykesville which holds a yearly Fine Arts and Wine festival; and the Town of Hampstead which touts itself as "the quintessential American town."

Shopping and Dining
Carroll County's amenities provide the opportunity to take the time to relax, to listen to music that moves the soul, and to eat the kind of food that makes the mouth water just to think about it. Many excellent restaurants call Carroll County home, and use of locally grown produce highlights their offerings. An array of local produce is sold in the area at farmer's markets, which many find to be a welcome interruption on their commute home from work.

Parks and Recreation
In summer, a week doesn't go by without an opportunity to attend a festival, carnival or special event. The best bet for hearing a variety of music is most likely the Common Ground on the Hill concert series. Even some of the smaller communities have their own concerts in the park.

Enjoy the scenic rolling hills of the area by taking a Civil War driving tour. If you would like to keep your visit on the merrier side (within merry moderation of course) a tour of Carroll County's wineries on the "Wine Trail" may be more to your liking. Don't forget that the big cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC are only an hour or so from almost anywhere in the county.

Living
As far as local jobs are concerned, employers with the largest workforce include two hospitals and the county schools. Random House publishing follows with its warehouse and distribution center. Other companies include: Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Evapco, a cooling equipment manufacturer, and General Dynamics Robotic Systems, which focuses on making unmanned systems technology. The Carroll County Department of Economic Development runs a small-business development center, which encourages start up businesses in the county, and offers consulting services and training programs to help firms grow.

Schools, Health, Transportation
This attitude of supporting economic growth is extended to the Carroll County Public Schools, which boasts eight high schools. Liberty High stands out as the only school to host a robotics team. Westminster is the home to both Carroll Community College and McDaniel College. CCC provides many degrees, including those in the allied heath fields. With almost four thousand students, McDaniel College is many a college student's dream as it has its own "self-design major."

Carroll County is the kind of place that makes some people alter their focus and discover a rewarding life at a little slower pace than in the nearby urban centers.
